Year 2017 continues to provide signs such as never before seen, with rare and never before seen catastrophes making 2017 the most expensive year on record for disasters in the United States.
Hurricanes, floods, firestorms , and other catastrophes caused $306 billion in total damage in 2017. There where 16 events that caused more than $1 billion in damage each, making 2017 a historic year for billion-dollar disasters.
The record-breaking year is also raising concerns about the future of coming natural disasters and their effects as scientists fear climate change could make extreme weather events even more damaging.
A public policy professor at the University of California who has studied how natural disasters impact societies, said that the effects of the 2017 disasters will reverberate for years to come. He went on to describe how that society doesn’t recover to where it had been before such disasters.
Saying that even if people rebuild and stitch together their lives it doesn’t resemble those they had before. And the country that experiences such a number of disasters is going to be made poorer in the long run.
Insurance risk experts say that the catastrophic events are giving us a foretaste of what is to come, with the experts expecting more extreme events to occur more often in the future.
