Iran’s English-language Press TV said more than 450 people were killed and 7,000 were injured when a magnitude 7.3 earthquake jolted the country.
Officials expect the death toll to climb as search and rescue teams reached remote areas of Iran.
At least 14 provinces in Iran had been affected and the situation is described as being critical with entire villages and towns destroyed. The earthquake was also felt in Iraq, Turkey, Israel and Kuwait.
And more than 70,000 people are now living outside and in need of emergency shelter.
Officials said the main problem now is sheltering people in the cold weather with the need for more tents.
This quake is the deadliest in the world so far this year.
