For the second day a swarm of earthquakes have rattled northern Israel in a rare uptick in seismic activity that put renewed focus on Israel’s preparedness for potentially more devastating quakes in the future.

Previously 3.0 magnitude quakes had sent tremors cross northern Israel’s Galilee region, and then another 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck four kilometers deep in the northern Sea of Galilee in early morning hours, the Israeli Geophysical Institute said, with tremors felt in northern Israel and the coastal Haifa region.

The latest tremblor was reported as a more powerful quake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale and hit around the same area with tremors reportedly felt across the country from the Dead Sea to Tel Aviv.

Though largely rocking the north, with its epicenter in the Galilee, it was felt by Israeli residents as far south as Tel Aviv, Modiin and Jerusalem, as well as in Lebanon and Syria.

Experts have recently warned Israel that the country is not prepared for the deaths and damage that could occur in the event of a major earthquake in the region.
