The Roman Pope Francis speaking only hours before US President Donald Trump’s planned announcement on Jerusalem, called for the city’s “status quo” to be kept saying new tension in the Middle East would further inflame world conflicts.

Trump is due today to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and set in motion the relocation of the US Embassy to the ancient city.

Many officials have said the decision will upend decades of US policy and risks fueling further violence in the Middle East.

In an appeal at the end of his weekly general audience at the Vatican, Pope Francis called for all to honor United Nations resolutions on Jerusalem.

 The pope told thousands of people at his general audience: “I cannot keep quiet about my deep worry about the situation that has been created in the last few days.”

Before making his comments, Francis met privately with a group of Palestinians involved in inter-religious dialog with the Vatican. And the pope spoke by telephone to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas about the crisis.

Previously, the Vatican City had already recognized Palestine as a nation state signing a treaty with the “State of Palestine” and calling for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and backing a two-state solution.
