It’s been 100 years since a global pandemic of flu claimed the lives of more than 50 million people around the world.
This pandemic, later coined “the Spanish Flu,” began in the military, and was first identified in early spring 1918 among military personnel in Kansas.
Within a year, the virus spread throughout the world, ultimately infecting one-third of the world’s population — about 500 million people — and killing 50 million of the people on Earth.
The flu is highly contagious and spreads most easily when people gather or live together. Flu viruses constantly change, and all seasonal flu originates from pandemic flu strains.
Influenza viruses constantly change, and on very rare occasions, flu viruses that normally only infect animals change in a way that allows them to easily infect people and spread.
The current flu epidemic continues to be dangerous and has worsened with infections and deaths still on the rise. Now Federal health officials say at least 16 more children died of the flu over the past week bringing the total of child deaths to at least 53.
And more states are reporting high levels of illness with hospitalizations now at the highest level seen, according to CDC Acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat, who called the flu one of the biggest health threats currently facing the U.S.
So can another pandemic happen? The short answer is yes. Pandemics can happen again.
The prophecies foretell that pestilences of contagious disease will be a sign of the Last Days at the end of the age, such as the Revelation 6 prophecy concerning the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
This is where the pale horse of deathly pestilence comes bringing death after war and famine. And history over and again has shown how deadly diseases have swept through armies and from them into the citizenry with the resulting human devastation.
Right now at this moment, overall hospitalizations for influenza-like illness are at their highest level ever since the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began collecting such data.
The worsening flu epidemic that’s now filling emergency rooms across the country is a concerning sign of how the prophecies can come true in the future.
