A strong magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit Papua New Guinea’s remote highlands striking near Porgera in the Pacific nation’s Enga province, destroying houses, causing landslides and damaging a major gas plant.
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake just struck Papua New Guinea again US seismologists said, coming after the first major quake in the same remote highland region.
Overall, 67 people have been killed. A state of emergency has been declared by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill in the affected areas.
It’s reported that people are finding it difficult to get to hospitals and health centers because of landslides and rescue workers are struggling to reach cut-off villages.
The disaster has been described by Australian officials based in the country as the biggest earthquake to hit the highland region in a century.
Thousands remain homeless and without food and clean water with blocked roads and power outages as well as the series of strong aftershocks continue to hamper rescue efforts.
