Freshman Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was asked by a SEC sports writer how he stayed calm to come off the bench with an incredible second-half performance during Alabama’s pressure-filled overtime victory to win the championship game.
When asked how, in the name of Bear Bryant, did a freshman bench jockey rise to this ridiculously pressurized occasion and become an instant hero, Tagovailoa said, “I was praying. I was speaking in tongues. It kept me calm.”
The reporter wrote he prayed before possessions, he prayed after possessions, and he prayed and passed and scrambled his way into Alabama lore. “I would say my poise comes from my faith,” Tagovailoa said. “I just pray for peace.”
The Merriam-Webster defines “speaking in tongues” as “to say strange words that no one can understand, especially as part of a religious experience.”
In the Scriptures, speaking in tongues was the sign of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit recorded in the Book of Acts second chapter when Jesus began His Church with 120 Jewish people initially receiving the experience, and then spreading to thousands in Jerusalem.
Then also in chapter ten the first Gentiles, the household of a Roman Centurion named Cornelius, also received the gift of the Holy Spirit for Apostle Peter and the Jews with him said they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God as they did in the beginning.
In this sports case, it definitely worked for Tagovailoa creating some kind of experience for him and Alabama fans in winning the game in spectacular fashion.
The prophecies foretell an increase of spiritual activity in the Last Days in that God said, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh.” (Acts 2, Joel 2)
And Apostle Peter also described how heaven must receive Jesus Christ until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. (Acts 3)
