An asteroid known as 2002 AJ129, will fly past in what NASA terms as near earth in just two weeks time on February 4. The 0.7-mile long body ─ larger than the tallest building on Earth, Dubai’s half-mile high Burj Khalifa skyscraper, is classed as a “potentially hazardous” asteroid by NASA.
Potentially hazardous asteroids, or PHAs, are defined by NASA as Asteroids in a Near-Earth-Orbit (NEO). But NASA is considering the space rock “potentially hazardous” because it flies within 4.6 million miles of our planet.
On February 4, however, it will pass within about 2.6 millions miles of Earth. During future trips, it could edge as close as 500,000 miles, or roughly twice the Earth-moon distance. So they keep an eye on it, but there is no need to worry, scientists say.
This PHA is set to fly by Earth at a whopping 67,000 miles per hour next month, and is is expected to be the largest and speediest space object to whiz past the Earth in 2018.
A “planetary defense” mission may sound like the plot of a science fiction movie blockbuster, but NASA is serious about tracking and preparing for killer asteroids. The space agency even has a mandate from Congress to find 90% of an estimated 300,000 near-Earth objects big enough to wipe a large city off the map.
Reports of space rocks that are capable of such devastation have passed by us with worrisome frequency, and there has recently been the lack of detection or last-minute detection of them providing examples of how blind we are to many NEOs that could smack into our planet and release potentially deadly amounts of energy.
NASA has been studying Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) since the 1970s. But the manager of the NASA NEO Program Office at JPL, said there are 46 that could potentially hit earth within the next 100 years.
