The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that deaths due to influenza and pneumonia have hit “epidemic” levels in the U.S.
The CDC situational update, which is a summary of weekly flu activity, is now saying that the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza has reached the epidemic threshold.
Also, they report there are now 49 states reporting widespread flu activity and 26 states experiencing high activity.
Some medical experts had previously predicted the worst flu season in history saying it’s because this year’s main flu strain, the influenza A virus, known as H3N2, is worse than the swine flu in 2009.
To put it in perspective, back when the swine flu was making headlines it infected just 51,000 people in Australia. This year’s H3N2 sickened over 215,000 and the illness has hit our shores.
Complicating matters is the fact that the H3N2 flu strain that’s dominant in the U.S. right now is not the one that was targeted by the flu vaccines distributed in North America.
But report also notes that all the virus samples tested this fall have been susceptible to the main-line medicines Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) as well as a new drug called Rapivab (peramivir).
The CDC with global health partners are in an effort to make addressing the situation a global priority.
The flu is a very infectious and dangerous virus, which has the ability to morph and literally kill millions.
The worst pandemic in recorded history was the Flu of 1918 which current estimates say 50–100 million people worldwide were killed.
That pandemic has been described as “the greatest medical holocaust in history” and may have killed more people than the Plaque of Black Death.
