Several earthquakes, including one measuring at least 4.1 on the Richter scale, jolted the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel on Wednesday morning. The earthquake rattled the Haifa region followed by several smaller tremors, authorities said.
The Israeli Geophysical Institute reported an earthquake registering 4.1 on the Richter scale that was centered four kilometers deep in the northern Sea of Galilee.
And there were more earthquakes, known as a swarm, but were smaller and not as noticeable, but the one measuring in above 4.0 on the Richter scale hit early at about 4:50 a.m.
Israel sits on a geologically active rift which runs through the Jordan Valley, and the region occasionally experiences small quakes. Experts say the area experiences a major quake every 100 years or so, with the last one in 1927 killing over 400 and leaving not a house in Jerusalem or Hebron without damage.
Experts recently warned Israel’s Knesset that the country is not prepared for the deaths and damage that could occur in the event of a major earthquake in the region.
