Reports say that two Israeli missiles struck a target at Damascus International Airport. Although Syrian state media acknowledged Israel making the attack, they tried to downplay the target and its location.
But reports say that the midnight attack from Israel targeted an Iranian cargo plane which had landed at the Damascus airport.
The Israeli airborne missiles hit an Iranian air force Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane that was to unload munitions at the Damascus airport and the explosions caused the plane to burst into flame with a number of casualties according to some sources.
Also, there were loud explosions just north of Israel’s Golan border with Syria. A Syrian army spokesman said they were caused by Syrian anti-air missiles aimed at intruding Israeli fighter jets.
Israel has warned of a growing Iranian military presence in neighboring Syria, which it sees as a threat to its safety. And its military has carried out attacks on Iranian and Iran-affiliated targets in Syria several times.
