A strong earthquake hit the Philippines measuring a whopping 6.1-magnitude on the island of Catanduanes, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which hit at a depth of 30 km (18 miles), about 50 km north-northwest of Pandan, on the island of Catanduanes. The tremor was also felt in parts of Metro Manila.
Tremors were felt miles away from its epicentre, with residents in the municipalities of Guinayangan, Quezon and Sorsogon City experiencing powerful shaking.
Instrumental intensity III was reported in Guinayangan, Quezon and Sorsogon City, Sorsogon while instrumental intensity II was reported in Lucban, Quezon. No major damage was expected from the quake, but locals should look out for aftershocks, the agencies said.
This earthquake came just after Hawaii was hit by a 6.9-magnitude quake which struck where the Island’s Kilauea volcano has been spewing flows of lava into residential areas, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.
