Researchers at MIT have developed a tattoo made of living ink that could lead to living computers on humans. The living ink is made of genetically programmed cells that activate when exposed to different types of stimuli.
The MIT engineers devised a 3-D printing technique that uses the new kind of ink made from the genetically programmed living cells, which they say will respond to the person’s environment.
Which means that sometime in the future, we could all be walking around with living, responsive tattoos that interact with our surroundings telling us or others information.
The team demonstrated its technique by printing a “living tattoo” prototype— a thin, transparent patch patterned with live bacteria cells in the shape of a tree. They say their technique can be used to fabricate “active” materials for human wearable sensors and interactive displays.
Also, the bio-engineers developed a model to predict the interactions between cells within a given 3-D-printed structure, under a variety of conditions. The team says researchers can use the model as a guide in designing responsive living materials.
Additionally, they said the cells could be used like workers in a factory engineering applications, not only for human epidermal applications but also such as implants and ingestibles should be possible.
In the future, they say researchers may use the team’s technique to print living computers on humans, having structures with multiple types of cells that communicate with each other, passing signals back and forth, much like transistors on a microchip.
