A man has deliberately drove a rented truck onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan killing at least eight and seriously injuring at least 12 others.
He emerged from the vehicle screaming “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before he was shot by police. The suspect was wounded and taken into custody.
The mayor of New York City said “This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.”
The New York Governor said the attack appeared to be a “lone wolf” incident with no apparent link to a wider terrorist plot.
The Islamic terrorist drove the truck down the bike path for about four blocks, striking cyclists and pedestrians before veering back into traffic lanes and striking a school bus and another vehicle.
