Its reported that the Syrian anti-air missiles, which hit and took down an Israeli F-16 in a raid on an Iranian base in Syria, were part of a system operated and commanded by the Russians from their Kheimim air base in Syria.
The report by DEBKAfile, an independent Israeli intelligence and security news service, says this shows the clash has therefore gone way beyond an Israeli confrontation with Syria and Iran and marks a serious deterioration in the security situation on Israel’s northern border.
The situation in Syria for Israel underwent a fundamental strategic change when Iran sent a UAV over Israel from a Syrian base it also shares with the Russians.
Then the Israeli F-16 was shot down during the Israeli air strike against the Iranian facility at the T-4 air base near Palmyra, which launched the UAV into Israeli airspace.
The Russian command in Syria keeps a close eye on all air facilities, and are allies with not only the Syrians but also the Iranian forces in Syria as well. Russia has advanced antiaircraft capacities deployed in Syria and Russia basically controls Syrian airspace, especially west of the Euphrates River.
This Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance on the ground and in the air in Syria is increasingly coming together into alignment against Israel.
This isn’t over. Its just beginning. Israel has drawn some red-lines in the sand.
But Iran is determined to continue in Syria by having a lasting Syrian base there from which to threaten Israel, which Israel is determined to prevent. While the government of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, is showing renewed confidence in firing on Israel’s warplanes due to the on-going support and abilities of their Russian allies.
Russia has played out the neutrality card about as long as it possibly can. Its bedfellows of Syria & Iran will keep pushing the boundaries of the conflict and force Russia’s hand in showing who it is committed to, and its not Israel.
We are seeing a definite scope creep of the kind of military activity deployed in the region against each side. And can expect more and more friction and incidents between the parties, given that Syria and Iran sense that they have the upper hand.
But neither side can be expected to back down. The conflict between Israel and this Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance can be expected to increase over time on Israel’s northern border.
