Recent news events show that gun violence is continuing unabated in U.S. schools killing and wounding young people.
Now a shooting at Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., left at least two people dead and 17 others injured after a student opened fire, officials said.
During a news conference later in the day, officials said the alleged shooter, a 15-year-old male student, was in custody and will be charged with murder and attempted murder.
The 17 people injured were all believed to be students, according to Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, who added that 12 of them suffered gunshot wounds. The two people killed include a 15-year-old female student, who died at the scene, and a 15-year-old male student, who died at the hospital.
A day before that a 15-year-old girl was hurt in a Jan. 22 shooting at Italy High School in Italy, Texas. A 16-year-old male student has been taken into custody, Ellis County police told Fox News.
The suspect “engaged the victim” in the school’s cafeteria and fired several shots with a semi-automatic handgun.
Previously in December, at Aztec High School in Aztec, N.M., a gunman, who was also a former student, disguised himself as a student to get inside the school on Dec. 7, 2017, according to authorities.
State police said that the shooter killed students Francisco I. Fernandez and Casey J. Marquez , adding that the students killed were not targeted, but were at the “wrong place at the wrong time.” Officials said the shooter eventually shot himself.
And the list of the recent school shootings goes on here. Our country’s schools should be safe havens for learning, but instead too many are becoming killing fields.
This spirit of violence unleashed in U.S. schools continues to spread as prayer to God and reading of the Holy Scriptures continue to be banned from U.S. classrooms.
