In what has been described as a strange event during weird weather, the southern California coast was struck with a phenomenon of  lightning storms that produced 1,500 pulses of lightning within five minutes and overall 2,200 lightning strikes in the area.

Approximately 2,200 lightning strikes hit the area stretching from Santa Barbara County to LA County, according to Curt Kaplan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

And nearly 1,500 pulses of lightning were recorded off the coast in one five-minute stretch where Mike Eliason, Santa Barbara Fire’s public information officer, captured dramatic bolts of lightning over Santa Barbara.

“For Southern California, its unusual,” Kaplan told CNN.

The Los Angeles National Weather Service said a strong batch of thunderstorms created “lightning storms,” prompting the agency to issue a warning alerting residents to take precautions because of their extreme power.

As to what was driving this strange weather, meteorologists called the phenomenon an atmospheric river with the jet stream coming further south and pushing an abundant amount of moisture into areas.

But this strange event, is just another weird weather occurrence this year, and in an area which also had a rare snow along the coastline in areas including Malibu.

There has been increasingly extreme weather happening on planet earth worldwide from one end of the globe to the other.
