The strategic Offutt Air Force Base was devastated by the unusual “Bomb Cyclone” that developed over land in 24 hours and brought devastation to the central U.S.
Offutt is home to Strategic Command, which oversees the country’s nuclear arsenal.
Flooding at the U.S. Air Force base damaged buildings and forced the attempted removal of planes until its runway was rendered unusable.
The “bomb cyclone” storm flooded about 60 structures including 30 buildings at the Offutt Air Force Base, said Ryan Hansen, a spokesman for the 55th Wing, a unit providing reconnaissance, intelligence and combat support to U.S. leaders.
And workers are still assessing damage to hangers and maintenance buildings with many completely inundated with as much as 8 feet of water.
Eight planes were able to leave the base, with one of the planes a Boeing-made E4-B plane; one of four the Air Force has that are meant to serve as an aerial command center in case of national emergency or destruction of ground bases, such as in a nuclear attack.
Disaster recovery crews are expected to arrive soon to begin work when floodwaters fully recede.
