The Israeli military reported an Israeli F-16 fighter jet has crashed after being hit by Syrian air defenses during an offensive in Syria. The plane was hit during air strikes in response to an Iranian drone launch into Israeli territory, Israel says.
In a further response, the IDF “targeted Iranian targets in Syria”, according to the military. The mission deep inside Syrian territory was successfully completed, it said.
But on its way back from the mission, one of Israel’s F-16 fighter jets crashed in northern Israel after coming under heavy Syrian antiaircraft fire.
After coming under Syrian anti-aircraft fire, the F-16’s two crew members ejected and were later taken to a hospital. One of them was “severely injured”, the IDF said.
It’s believed this is the first Israeli plane lost under enemy fire in decades. And this incident has significant potential to escalate the conflict in the region of the Syrian Euphrates River Valley.
