U.S. President Trump is being accused of “naked aggression” against Muslims as tensions rise across the Middle East over his plans to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and for the U.S. to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The Organization for Islamic Cooperation made the charge and called on its 57 member states to sever ties with the U.S. if it proceeds with the move of recognizing the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The organization said the transferring of any diplomatic mission to Jerusalem by any country constitutes an attack on Muslims and the Palestinians.
A number of Muslim nations, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkey, have strongly condemned the possible move.
The U.S. State Department has already warned American embassies worldwide to heighten security ahead of possible violent protests.
Both Israel and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. Since 1948 the U.S has not recognized any state’s sovereignty over Jerusalem, a position that has remained unchanged under both Republican and Democratic presidents.
Analysts have said U.S. recognition of Jerusalem would endanger the potential of a two-state settlement to the conflict.
