The country of Turkey has appeared to issue a war threat against Israel after Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the country’s capital.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched a hard-hitting attack on the country of Israel and demanded Washington reverse last week’s controversial move.
Addressing a summit of Muslim leaders in Istanbul, Mr Erdogan described the development as a reward for Israeli “terror acts” and said the city of Jerusalem was a red line.
He raged: “Israel is an occupying state. Israel is a terror state.”
Mr Erdogan went on: “I invite all countries supporting international law to recognise Jerusalem as the occupied capital of Palestine.” He was joined by leaders and ministers from 50 Muslim countries, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who branded Mr Trump’s decision “the greatest crime”.
Mr Abbas told the emergency meeting Mr Trump was giving the city away like it belonged to America and said the US should play no further part in the Middle East peace process.
