American embassies around the world went on heightened alert over potential violence as President Donald Trump potentially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Such a decision would reverse decades of US policy not to take a stance on the fate of Jerusalem on the grounds that this was an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate and decide.

Such a move could spark demonstrations or violence by Palestinians or by Muslims around the world, in part because of the sensitivity of the Jerusalem site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif.

Muslim leaders are warning that such a step would have catastrophic consequences.

And a former US counter-terrorism official said simply, ‘This is playing with fire.’
