There are now 286 cases of possible and confirmed acute flaccid myelitis in the United States this year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The patients with confirmed AFM are in 31 states, which the CDC has now identified for the first time.

There are 15 cases in Colorado, the state with the highest number, followed by Texas with 14 confirmed cases. Nineteen states have no confirmed cases, and 12 states are reporting only one confirmed case, according to the CDC.

Although children across the United States have been developing the rare polio-like illness, the reason for the cases remains a mystery, according to health officials.

AFM is a condition that affects the nervous system and causes muscle weakness, according to the CDC. In particular, the condition can cause weakness in the arms and legs along with loss of muscle tone and problems with reflexes. 

The unexpected spike in AFM, “is a mystery” to health officials, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, said in a press conference.

The CDC has formed a research-focused task force and has instructed states to better track patients to help determine the cause of the illness. The CDC said it is increasing its network of neurologists, its disease detectives, to investigate and track cases.

Pestilent disease was described as a sign of the last days at the end of this age in the prophecy of Matthew 24. And the world is realizing not only new diseases breaking into societies, but also the recurrence of old diseases making a comeback.
