Members and supporters of an Iranian-backed militia have attacked the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes.
Hundreds of angry attackers affiliated with the Iranian-backed militia shouted “Death to America” as they attacked the US Embassy and broke into the embassy compound in Baghdad trapping US diplomats inside.
The attack on the embassy was in response to U.S. airstrikes on the Kataib Hezbollah militia of Iran. After that militia had previously attacked a US base in Iraq with rockets wounding US troops and killing an American.
Iran had vowed retaliation with Iran’s Foreign Minister saying that the US must accept responsibility of the consequences for their attacks.
Many of the embassy attackers were wearing militia uniforms and carried flags signifying their allegiance to the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia.
The demonstrators put graffiti on the US Embassy walls signifying their allegiance to Iran. Where they wrote the names of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and powerful Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.
The US Embassy compound lies inside the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad , which is normally off limits to ordinary people. But thousands of people walked unimpeded into the zone to join the demonstrations as Iraqi security forces simply mingled with the crowd.
When the US Embassy was attacked, Iraqi security forces nearby initially made no attempt to intervene. Only after an Iraqi army commander later showed up and gave an order did Iraqi security forces attempt to intervene.
As they prevented the demonstrators from going farther inside the facility, with Iraqi security forces forming an impromptu buffer between the demonstrators and American personnel inside.
During the event inside the embassy, U.S. diplomats and embassy staffers were safe as they huddled in the fortified safe room. The US State Department said later that “U.S. personnel are secure” and that “there are no plans” to evacuate the embassy.
The US Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon said the US was sending additional forces to support personnel at the embassy. As there were reports that two Apache helicopters and a contingent of additional marines were being sent.
The situation remains fluid in Baghdad as the protesters have set up tents outside the embassy where they said they intended to stage a sit-in.
And dozens of yellow flags belonging to Iran-backed Shiite militias fluttered atop the US Embassy’s concrete wall along with the anti-U.S. graffiti.
The storming of the US Embassy in Iraq by Iranian-backed militia and the lack of Iraqi protection of the embassy shows the influence Iran now has on the ground in the country.
As the series of escalating events increases the Mid-East tensions between the US and Iran increasing the possibility of more direct proxy conflict and possibly open war in the Mid-East.

As the born again Church is not appointed unto wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10) but instead to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
